With the recent spurt in treating deafness in India, particularly after the launch of the National Deafness Program, there has been a noticeable rise in the awareness of and implementation of cochlear and hearing implants in India. A CI or cochlear implant mechanism helps restore hearing in individuals with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing impediment. This is the latest treatment for individuals where hearing aids either provide little benefit or don’t work at all.

CI is a medical that actually replaces a sense. It bypasses the inner ear’s non-functioning parts and provides direct electrical stimulation to the cochlea’s nerve fibres. It comprises an audio processor worn externally behind the ear as also an internal implant, that is placed surgically inside the ear.

The sound processor connects with the abutment by just a click and catches sound waves like traditional hearing aids do. However, the sound waves instead of passing through the ear canal actually become sound vibrations that pass through the skull bone. Because of the bone and sound processor’s direct connection because of the implant and the abutment, the patient’s skin doesn’t dampen the vibrations, giving out a much clearer sound. The additional advantage is that the sound processor can be clicked off while sleeping or showering.

Another implant is the Ponto System that works on Direct Sound Transmission, providing best amplification as also output.
